With the Flyers heading down to Washington Friday night for Game 1 against the Capitals in their persuit of the Stanley Cup, the good people at Faceoff Factor have put together an excellent preview of the best-of-seven series.

Capitals(3) vs. Flyers (6) Conference Quarterfinals Preview

For the series preview, I’ve contacted two experts on the subjects of both Capitals and Flyers hockey. Let’s start with Washington.

The team from On Frozen Blog was kind enough to answer a few questions regarding the upcoming quarterfinals series between the Capitals and the Flyers.

JM: 1. Obviously, Alex Ovechkin had a huge hand in leading the Capitals to the post-season, but who are some of the more “Dark Horse” components of the Capitals that also contributed to this run?

OFB: Brooks Laich’s 21 goals (including 4 GWG) and his consistently tough play have been a big part of the Caps’ surge. Tom Poti has stepped up as the team’s defensive leader, holding together an injury-plagued defense and leading the team in TOI for half their games. Sergei Fedorov has …

In their ongoing effort to quell the wide receiver woes that have plagued the city of Philadelphia since the departure of Terrell Owens, the Eagles latest attempt involved an interview with the University of California rookie prospect DeSean Jackson. Jackson boasted the fastest 40-yard dash for all wide receivers at the scouting combine in Indy, clocking in at a blazing 4.35 seconds. However, what he has in speed, he lacks in size. Jackson’s 5-foot-10, 169 pound stature isn’t likely to intimidate an opposing cornerback on the professional level, but players of similar size have found success in the NFL. Jackson can be most easily likened to Steve Smith of the Carolina Panthers, who at 5-foot-9, still manages to to draw double coverage when running routes. Jackson recorded 6 touchdowns, 65 receptions and 762 receiving yards in his junior year at Cal.

Although he probably wouldn’t make a drastic or immediate impact in the Eagles’ passing game, his speed could lend a much needed boost to the punt return team. Jackson was …

Jimmy Rollins left the Phillies 5-2 win over the Mets yesterday in what has been diagnosed as an ankle sprain. Rollins was going back to second base after a pickoff attempt and says he heard something pop. Rollins finished the inning and came around the score on a Chase Utley double. Eric Bruntlett came in as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the inning.

While in most cases anytime you head a pop, the worst is feared, in this case it might not be so bad. After the game, Rollins was only mildly limping and is considered day-to-day. While it’s a scare for the Phillies, Rollins doesn’t see it as a big deal.

“The ankle is fine,” he said. “I’m able to walk pretty much without a limp. It’s just when I did it I heard a nice little pop and it felt like somebody dropped a weight on my foot. I probably could have gone out there (to play shortstop in the eighth inning), but me at 50 percent and …
