In adding some bullpen depth, the Phillies signed relief pitcher Steve Kline to a minor league contract.  Kline was rumored to be Philly-bound via trade earlier this spring, but the Giants had no desire to take Wes Helms.  They opted to release Kline a week later.

Kline’s an eleven-year veteran with a career ERA of 3.51.  He’s had success against lefties as they only bat .238 against him.  Kline will contribute to the bullpen at some point, but he’ll report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to get into game shape.

I’ve never been a big fan of Kline, but I think this is a good signing.  With JC Romero the only left-handed reliever in the bullpen it adds some depth.  Romero could be used late in the game as a set-up reliever with Tom Gordon and Kline would become the lefty specialist the Phillies need.

In one word, that’s how I’d sum up last nights Phillies/Mets game. Stupidly embarrassing if I was going to use two, as the Phillies snapped their nine game winning streak over the Mets, losing 8-2.

While the Mets were only able to muster 5 hits against Phillies pitching, the Phillies gave the game away, committing 4 errors and walking 9. These miscues led to six unearned runs, and a blowout loss.

Other observations:

- It’s bad enough if you make two errors in one game. It’s worse when you make two errors in one inning. Eric Bruntlett looked like he was trying to field with his feet in the third inning. His first error might have been the worst error I’ve seen in years. After botching a routine double play ball, he fell on his face when trying to retrieve the ball. Bruntlett’s errors led directly to four runs. For all our sakes Jimmy Rollins will return soon.

- Some people are going to say the Kyle Kendrick didn’t pitch that bad it was the …
