In adding some bullpen depth, the Phillies signed relief pitcher Steve Kline to a minor league contract. Kline was rumored to be Philly-bound via trade earlier this spring, but the Giants had no desire to take Wes Helms. They opted to release Kline a week later.
Kline’s an eleven-year veteran with a career ERA of 3.51. He’s had success against lefties as they only bat .238 against him. Kline will contribute to the bullpen at some point, but he’ll report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to get into game shape.
I’ve never been a big fan of Kline, but I think this is a good signing. With JC Romero the only left-handed reliever in the bullpen it adds some depth. Romero could be used late in the game as a set-up reliever with Tom Gordon and Kline would become the lefty specialist the Phillies need.
