douche.jpgIn one word, that’s how I’d sum up last nights Phillies/Mets game. Stupidly embarrassing if I was going to use two, as the Phillies snapped their nine game winning streak over the Mets, losing 8-2.

While the Mets were only able to muster 5 hits against Phillies pitching, the Phillies gave the game away, committing 4 errors and walking 9. These miscues led to six unearned runs, and a blowout loss.

Other observations:

- It’s bad enough if you make two errors in one game. It’s worse when you make two errors in one inning. Eric Bruntlett looked like he was trying to field with his feet in the third inning. His first error might have been the worst error I’ve seen in years. After botching a routine double play ball, he fell on his face when trying to retrieve the ball. Bruntlett’s errors led directly to four runs. For all our sakes Jimmy Rollins will return soon.

- Some people are going to say the Kyle Kendrick didn’t pitch that bad it was the defense that let him down. While the defense was terrible, don’t kid yourself. Kendrick walked six batters in less than three innings. The strike zone was tight, so he was pinched, but he didn’t challenge hitters. I know Kendrick isn’t an overpowering pitcher, but when you’re at the major league level, you need to have enough confidence in your pitches to challenge hitters.

- Tuesday Chase Utley set a record with getting hit by a pitch three times in a game. Yesterday Pedro Feliz set his own personal record; two consecutive games with a walk (his career average is walk for every 19 at-bats).  If Feliz has three balls on him, it doesn’t matter when the pitcher throw it he’s hacking.

- Chad Durbin came in relief of Kendrick in the third inning, and pitched 3.2 innings of no-hit ball.  The first two batters (David Wright - Bruntlett error and Carlos Beltran - Walk), got on, but then he retired the next 11 batters he faced.

- The Phillies better hope Rollins comes back soon. It wasn’t just his defense that was missed when Bruntlett looked like a blind-man, it was his entire presence. The engery he brings when he leads the game, and the way he pumps the offense up cannot be replaced.

The Phillies just need to put this mess behind them, and hope Adam Eaton continues the success he’s had against the Mets in the past. The rubber game of the series is tonight at 7:00, as Eaton faces John Maine.
