Ed Wade is in Houston now as their general manager, but it doesn’t mean he still doesn’t pay attention to the Phillies. Wade, who spent 16 years in the Phillies organization likes the Phillies progress since he was fired after the 2005 season.
Regardless, Wade is a member of the Astros now.
“But the bottom line is we’re coming in there trying to win three games and get back on track ourselves,” Wade said yesterday. “But I’m happy with the way things have turned out with the core group of guys that were left behind there. Everybody is aware of what Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard have done the last couple of years, but I’m glad to see Pat [Burrell] is having a good start to his season. I’m happy that, at least in a lot of people’s minds, Charlie [Manuel] has validated what we saw in him when we hired him, and those types of things.”
I noticed he only commented about moves that were made under his watch. Almost to defend some of the bad press he took during his eight years as the general manager. During Wade’s tenure the Phillies drafted Howard, Burrell, Chase Utley, Cole Hamels, and Rollins. He also hired Manuel.
Despite the core of players Wade did put together, all wasn’t rainbows and gumdrops during his reign. He came under fire for the Phillies underachievements, and made poor transactions (Uggie Urbina for Placido Polanco sticks out in my mind). When he was fired on October 10, 2005 Phillies fans rejoyce.
I’m glad Wade landed on his feet and put together the core of players the Phillies have now, but he’s Houston’s problem now.

Personally, I so hoped Ed Wade would be washing dishes at Denny’s. Who would have thought in a million years he would get another GM job. Kind of like who would have thought Rich Kotite would get another head coaching job. Here’s hoping you have some of Kotite’s success Ed.
