Reid’s Son Headed to Prison

Garrett Reid, son a Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Andy Reid, was sent to state prison after pleading guilty to charges of drug smuggling on Wednesday and faces a minimum of two years in jail. Reid was charged after admitting to smuggling 89 prescription pills into a county jail. The 25-year old son of the reserved, Mormon coach could be released to a less restrictive facility if he is admitted into a drug rehabilitation program, according to Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman.

340x1.jpgReid was already serving time in county jail as the result of a heroin induced car crash that injured a motorist last summer. He allegedly smuggled in the prescription pills into the county jail when he surrendered himself to the police on the crash-related charges.

“While we understand that some defendants, this one in particular, have substance-abuse issues, he still committed a very serious offense,” Ferman said. “We need to take a very hard line on crimes like this to make sure that prison authorities can maintain order.”

The younger Reid once boasted to probation officers that he was a drug addict and that he got an adrenaline rush from selling drugs on the very dangerous and drug infested streets of inner city Philadelphia.

His brother Britt Reid, 23, is in a county drug program after pleading guilty to separate  drug and gun charges.

Garrett Reid entered his plea Wednesday before Judge Steven O’Neill, who last year questioned the parenting skills and lack of supervision of Andy and wife Tammy Reid and referred to their house as a “drug emporium.”

The circumstances surrounding their two sons has taken a serious toll on the quiet and mild mannered Reid. In an interview with Philadelphia Magazine in January of this year, the Reids spoke openly of their sons’ long standing drug abuse problem. Despite criticisms over later revalations that the Reids were allowed to read the article and suggest changes before it went to print, the article was seen as a unique insight into the life of Coach Reid. Reid is known for divulging very little even about the ongoings of the Eagles, let alone his personal life. The Reids spoke openly of the many attempts they have undertaken to get their sons into drug rehab programs and the toll it has taken on their family. They have three other children in addition to Garret and Britt.
