The National League’s leading All Star vote getter is currently mired in the worst hitting slump of his career. Phillies‘ second baseman Chase Utley is 0-20 in his last five games, and is only 9-54 in the last two weeks. He has seen his batting average plummet 32 points during the five game stretch from an impressive .325. Utley’s slump, coupled with the Phillies’ poor play over the past nine games, spell impending doom for the NL East leading Phils. Or do they?

No one in the Phillies’ organization seems too concerned with Utley’s recent struggles. The last thing first baseman Ryan Howard said to reporters during his post-game interview after the Phillies’ 7-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox Wednesday was, “Don’t worry about Chase.”

Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel believes all Chase needs is some rest. “He needs a day off. I’m glad we have a day off.” Manuel then admitted that he would have probably benched Utley if the Phillies had a game on Thursday. However, that is not to say that Manuel is worried this is going to drag out long term.

“It’s not surprising to me at all,” Manuel said. “Ted Williams would go 0-for-20. That’s part of the game. Those are the things you work though. That’s all part of it. This is an everyday grind.”

Utley is equally as unphased. “Baseball can be frustrating at times,” he said. “It is a game of failure and you have to learn to deal with failure. The more even keel you can be, the more sane it will keep you.”

Outfielder Shane Victorino put it best. “He’s that great of a player that you could just snap and he could go 10-for-10.”

Lets sure hope so.
