As many know by now, at least those of us that read MLBlogs.com, Alyssa Milano, actress, model, entrepreneur, beauty, has a blog devoted to her beloved Dodgers. Not only is it remarkable to see an actor so publicly devoted to sport, especially one that does not normally attract a plethora of celebs, but it is even more remarkable to have a female celeb as a well informed, smart, passionate fan. And I do not mean that in a sexist way. Obviously, plenty of women are smart and passionate fans of all sports, not to mention wonderfully talented athletes in their own right. But my point is that in a day and age when most of the female celebs are in the news for their partying, divorcing, foreign baby adopting, etc., it is really nice to see someone in the public eye for something like baseball.
And Alyssa Milano is incredibly passionate and really knows her baseball, more so than many of my own friends. She is a die hard Dodgers fan, bleeding blue with every Dodger heartbreak. As a Phillies fan, I can relate to the consistent highs and lows that the Dodgers bestow on their fans. I have found her entries to be interesting, intriguing, and highly entertaining. It is a lot of fun to see baseball through the perspective of a famous actress. Too often we are made to think that celebrities are above the rest of us, in a league and status all their own. By reading her blog, you come to see that Alyssa is just like those of us that sit in the field box seats, as well as those of us who sit in the 300 level.
She is a fan, first and foremost. She is also leading the charge trying to make baseball and sports more appealing to women. She is at Citizen’s Bank Park today promoting her new clothing line, TOUCH, which is a women’s apparel line at the MLB.com shop. TOUCH is aimed at bringing more women into baseball. Most of sports and sports apparel is aimed at men, leaving little for the female fan to express themselves with. This provides those like Alyssa a way to cheer their teams on.
Alyssa truly understands baseball and what makes it so great. She understands the importance of sport and the out that it gives us every night. She understands how it brings people together and gives us a distraction in the darkest of times. To quote one of her posts (I hope she doesn’t mind),
We may disagree. You may think the Cardinals won The World Series while I think the Tigers lost The World Series. You may not like Bonds for cheating while I dislike Bonds for lying about cheating. But baseball is ours and no matter what our differences are, where we come from, what we do for a living, what ethnicity or religion we are, we share a bond. It’s a bond that is cemented by a red-laced ball and the comfort of hearing it land in a glove. All you need is gLove. And for those nine innings, all our differences are irrelevant. In a time when we are so politically divided and as you have confirmed in your comments, tend to disagree, we unite — and all we see is blue.
While we obviously don’t all see Dodger blue, we all see MLB blue, red and white. This is America’s sport. This is our past time. Basketball has Jack Nicholson and Spike Lee. But their fandom is part of their celebrity. Baseball humbles even the most beautiful and famous of celebrities, and celebrates even the most humble fan. This is our sport.

Seriously? That’s the best picture you could find of Alyssa? Piss Poor Fella’s… Piss Poor.
It’s the picture from her blog marketing Touch. I felt it was appropriate. I’ve added a fun one just for you Gerard.
