Jimmy does look pretty terrible right now. He was the voice of the Phillies last year and had by far his best year. Is he the leader of this team, I don't know? He has never struck me as that, and honestly despite his great play last year after his "big talk" I don't see him ever having been looked up to by all the other players. Last year and in 2006 people always discussed what Rowand brought to the team. You are exactly right though that dogging it and phoning it in won't do at all, and it seems he is.

Problem is this type of year batting wise is what he gives you. Nothing about his performance is that far off of what he has done in the past. He has a slightly lower batting average and a slightly lower OBP. He is our lead off hitter and this has always been the problem with him, he doesn't get on base enough. He has never been the Phillies best player, but he has always seemed to give it his all every game in the past. Granted his RBI numbers are down this year mainly because the bottom of the lineup can't hit. Rarely are people on base for him this year when his spot comes up.

I always enjoyed Rollins enthusiasm and drive to overcome what I think is an average bat. The Phillies need people who get on base and start rallies or manufacture runs. Unfortunately neither Rollins or Victorino is proficient enough at getting on base to truly be great in my eyes (although when they do the Phils sure enjoy wasting those opportunities lately; see 1st inning last night). There is a dearth of traditional lead-off hitters in baseball, and if the Phillies could find one I think it would benefit them greatly with what is in the rest of the lineup. The achilles heal with this group is always the all or nothing the lineup gives (very evident against Colorado in the playoffs last year and right now).
