Former Philadelphia Flyer Craig Berube is headed back to his old team for his second stint as an Assistant Coach. Berube is currently the head coach of the Flyers’ minor league affiliate Phantoms and was an assistant coach with the big league club in 2006-2007. Berube is replacing Terry Murray on the Flyers’ bench, as he is now the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings. John Paddock has been named as Berube’s successor with the Phantoms.

Under Berube, the Phantoms went 46-27-4-3 to finish second in the AHL’s East Division and advanced to the East Division Finals last season.

“Craig will bring new energy to the Flyers’ coaching staff,” said general manager Paul Holmgren. “His knowledge of, and experience with, many of our young players will be invaluable.

In 17 NHL seasons (1986-2003), Berube registered 61 goals and 98 assists for 159 points. He had 3,149 penalty minutes in 1,054 career regular-season games for the Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals and New York Islanders.

For the Flyers (1986-87 through 1990-91, 1998-99 and 1999-2000), Berube recorded 20 goals and 34 assists and 1,138 penalty minutes in 323 regular-season games.

“I’m very happy to get a chance to return to the NHL with the Flyers,” Berube said. “A year ago, going back down to the Phantoms (as their head coach) was a good opportunity for me to get experience and to show that I could be a head coach. Now, getting a chance to go back to the NHL, especially with the Flyers, is a good opportunity for me, too.”

Berube was a tenacious and gritty player, ranking seventh all time in penalty minutes. His 1,138 penalty minutes for the Flyers rank him ninth on the all time franchise list.
