This has been quite a week for Philadelphia sports fans. The Phillies had two crucial series against the Washington Nationals and the New York Mets and the Eagles opened their series against the St. Louis Rams.

The Phillies lost two out of three to the Nationals at Citizen’s Bank Park, which put them three games back of the Mets coming into Shea Stadium on Friday. Red hot Brett Myers threw eight shutout innings as the Phillies took game one 4-0. Jamie Moyer went seven innings in game two on Sunday as the Phillies won game two and had all the momentum in the world going into the showdown on Sunday night in a nationally televised game. Johan Santana faced off against Cole Hamels, who appeared hesitant earlier in the week as to whether he wanted to ball in such a big game.

The series was a showdown that begged the question, Which Team Has the Better Pitching Rotation? The Phillies won this round, although the Mets won out in the battle of the aces. The Phillies start this week just two games back of first place as they take on the Florida Marlins and then the Milwaukee Brewers come to town for a four game set.

The Eagles put the rest of the National Football League on notice on Sunday with a commanding win over the Rams, 38-3, at Lincoln Financial Field. Rookie wide receiver DeSean Jackson had six receptions for 106 yards and Donovan McNabb was 21 for 33 with 361 yards passing and three touchdowns. For the first time in a long time, McNabb is completely healthy and perhaps for the first time since McNabb made his initial splash in the NFL ten years ago, McNabb has got this city buzzing at the beginning of a season.

The Eagles face off against bitter rival Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football next week. During that game we should see what this team is truly made of, whether DeSean Jackson is for real, and whether McNabb is back.

    • “I’m leaving on a good note. I got some experience. I’ll go down there, get that pitch count up and get my arm ready for the season. I’m actually excited about it. It was all at once (the new delivery). It was kind of shaky a little bit at the beginning, but I guess that’s why the Minor Leagues are there.”
