New York Giants’ widereceiver Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg with a handgun while out in a New York City nightclub Friday night. The wound is reportedly not life-threatening.

Burress, who has already been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins with a hamstring injury, will most likely miss the Week 14 matchup against the Eagles.

While details of the incident are still sketchy, there has been speculation that Burress has not been satisfied with the impact he has had on the team as an off-the-field distraction this season, believing he has yet to live up to his full potential.

According to the New York Daily News:

Burress’ erratic antics already cost him $204,000 in fines this year. He was suspended for one game after going AWOL and benched for the first quarter of another game after skipping medical treatment.

Part of that $204,000 was a $45,000 fine for verbally abusing an official. He has been fined more than 30 times during his four years in …

Despite being considered a top-contender to make the NBA Finals coming into this off-season, the 76ers are a dissapointing 7-9 after suffering their third straight loss on Friday night, a 102-78 thumping at the hands of the Boston Celtics.

The Sixers were down by as many as 30 points at one point. While no one expected them to be better than the defending champions, they were expected to at least compete.

Coach Maurice Cheeks said he made sure to leave a lasting message with his struggling team.

“Yeah, I left one,” Cheeks said during his post-game press conference after taking about 5 minutes longer than usual to meet with reporters. “I left it with them.”

When asked whether it was a stronger, more definitive message then the one he delivered earlier this season, Cheeks responded with a less than definitive yes.

“For me, yeah,” Cheeks said. “But you have to ask them that. But, for me, yes.”

To their credit, the players seem to understand that they are seriously …

Eagles’ guard Max Jean-Gilles, playing in place of the injured Shawn Andrews, broke his right ankle right before half-time during Thursday’s Thanksgiving game against the Arizona Cardinals.

With 12-seconds left in the half, Jean-Gilles was blocking as quarterback Donovan McNabb was scrambling around. Cardinals’ linebacker Chike Okeafor tried to dive for McNabb’s leggs but caught Jean-Gilles right leg instead, bending it backwards.

Tears streamed down the face of Jean-Gilles as he was carted off the field. Eagles’ coach Andy Reid said that the injury would require surgery, but that no timetable has been set as of yet. It is a similar injury to one suffered by Andrews at the beginning of the 2004 season. Andrews broke his fibula and had season-ending surgery.

Speaking of Andrews, he has finally returned from California, but it is still uncertain as to whether he will be able to play again this season. If he can’t, then the Eagles will have to make a roster move, perhaps promoting fourth-round rookie Mike McGlynn, who …

On the set of the NFL Network’s postgame show after the Eagles Thanksgiving victory over the Arizona Cardinals, former Cowboy Deion Sanders showed that he is still an idiot.

Many fans stayed after the game and chanted for Donovan McNabb as he joined the postgame cast, which apparently annoyed Neon Deion.

“Can I tell them something for you?” he said. “First of all, I would like to tell all these idiotic fans to shut-up. Don’t get on his bandwagon now. You’re the same guys who booed him on his first incompletion.”

Post game host Rich Eisen then asked Sanders what he really thought of Philly fans.

“I can’t stand them. I really can’t. It’s not because I was a former Cowboy because I didn’t give a darn about any fans. They all hated me because I performed well,” Sanders said. “But they way they treated this man from Day One, it’s not justifiable. They will not treat any other quarterback in the NFL, like we said, Peyton …

The Phillies announced Friday the signing of South Philly native Mike Koplove, a veteran righthanded reliever, to a minor league contract.

The signing is seen as more of an insurance move than adding a serious guy to the 25-man roster. Koplove, a graduate of Chestnut Hill Academy, has not seen consistent time in the majors since 2005 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. That season he had an ERA of 5.07 in 44 appearances.

It will be tough for him to make the roster. The Phillies already have a pretty well cemented bullpen with closer Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, J.C. Romero, Chad Durbin, and Scott Eyre. Clay Condrey is arbitration eligible, but will most likely be back. If the Phillies make no more bullpen moves, then there should be room for Koplove, but if they pursue one or two more guys like Juan Cruz or David Weathers, which they are expected to do, then he will probably start the year in Triple A-Lehigh Valley. He would then be brought …

The Flyers ended their six-game winning streak on Friday with a loss in an overtime matinee against the Carolina Hurricanes. Sergei Samsonov scored with 1:07 left in the extra period to put the ‘Canes up 3-2.

“You try to get as much speed as you can to avoid the pokecheck,” Samsonov said of his winning goal. “Once I got to the net, I had more room than I thought, so I just tried to squeeze one by.”

Samsonov used his incredible speed to fly down to the goalmouth and put a forehand shot against the still reeling Martin Biron. The win ended another streak, a three-game losing streak by Carolina. The goal caught the Flyers’ netminder off-guard.

“I thought that he was going to go around me to the glove side a little further out, but he made a quick shot right away,” the goaltender said.

Patrick Dwyer and Tuomo Ruutu also scored for the Hurricanes. Joffrey Lupul and Jeff Carter each had a goal and an assist for the Flyers. Carter’s goal was his league-leading 16th of the …

Eagles’ cornerback Asante Samuel is doubtful for Thursday’s Thanksgiving matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.

The loss of Samuel will make the already tough assignment of covering the Cardinals’ wide receivers even more trying. Arizona has three wide receivers – Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Breaston – among the top 15 in receiving yards in the NFL.

That makes it even more likely that Thursday’s game will be an offense shootout, with the defense having a minimal affect on the outcome.

Running back Correll Buckhalter is also listed as questionable for Thursday’s game with a sprained knee ligament. While Brian Westbrook is also listed as questionable, he practiced Wednesday and will most likely play.

With all the talk of the end of the Donovan McNabb/Andy Reid Era looming on the horizon, and this season almost certainly over, I for one have little motivation to ruin one of the best holidays of the year with another embarrassing Eagles performance. Sure, you say the Arizona Cardinals have the worst passing defense in the league and that it should be a gunslinging brawl; that McNabb has a ton of motivation to succeed and throw for 500 yards. But let’s be serious here, they tied the then 1-8 Cincinnati Bengals and the next week got blown out by the mediocre Baltimore Ravens.

Let’s face it, this team sucks. So instead of ending a day full of friends, family and wonderful food with the Beagles, I’ve found 10 far more superior shows to watch on at the same time.
10. Orlando Magic vs. Washington Wizards (TNT) – The Magic are 10-4 this season and it’s always a fun time watching Dwight Howard imitate Superman. It should be especially fun watching him square off against …

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed former Phillie RJ Swindle.  Swindle was signed by the Phillies in 2007 after spending a majority of the season with the Newark Bears.  Armed with pinpoint control and a 55 mph curveball Swindle began the 2008 season with Reading and after posting 0.54 ERA in 11 appearances was promoted to Lehigh Valley.  He continued to impress at Triple A, posting a 1.98 ERA and striking out an impressive 51 batters in 36 innings.  More impressive he only walked 7 over that span.

I remember during the season monitoring Swindle’s progress and looked forward to see him making his major league debut.  That day came on July 7th and it’s a vivid memory in my head.  It was on of Adam Eaton’s final starts of the season.  Eaton failed to get out of the third inning and put the Phillies in a quick 8-0 hole.  In the top of the sixth inning with the score 8-1 Swindle was called from …

Phillies.com beat writer Ken Mandel is reporting the Phillies are close to announcing a multiyear deal with Jamie Moyer. Some rumors have circulated that both parties are interested but have had some scheduling difficulties, but Mandel is saying sources close to the Phillies that the deal is almost completed, it’s just a matter of the Phillies announcing the signing.

It’s been assumed Moyer would return, and once this becomes official it’s a big signing for the Phillies. For most the signing for a 46-year old pitcher isn’t much, but Moyer pitched like the Phillies #2 pitcher last summer and the knowledge he passes off to Cole Hamels, Kyle Kendrick, and J.A. Happ is invaluable.

As for Pat Burrell it doesn’t appear to be as promising. Scott Lauber is reporting that the most the Phillies will offer Burrell in terms of years is two. Given his defensive issues …

Chase Utley had hip surgery yesterday at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, and according to Ruben Amaro Jr. the surgery appears to be “favorable”. Anytime a surgery takes place, it’s not known if it’s an actual success until rehabilitation begins, but all signs right now are pointing to Utley being on the mend.

Utley’s return to the baseball field is now anywhere from 4-6 months. Given that time frame, while there’s a chance Utley might be ready for Opening Day, odds are he will not, meaning who will be the Phillies Opening Day second baseman?

Eric Bruntlett – Bruntlett could have to be the logical choice, especially if what the front office says is true, that they will not bring in a second baseman regardless that Utley might miss the beginning of the season. Bruntlett wasn’t spectacular for the Phillies last season batting .220 in limited action (mostly as a late inning

Center Danny Briere was absent again in last night’s victory over the Dallas Stars. Briere has missed the last six games with a strained groin and it’s unknown when the Flyers center will return.

“It’s frustrating because there’s not much improvement,” Briere said at the Skate Zone in Voorhees “After the first two steps, it hits me. There’s no power. I can’t start and stop – and that’s my game. I need to be quick and taking off and hitting holes, and right now I can’t do that…Only my body will tell me when I’m ready to go. It’s frustrating because I thought I’d be in the lineup last weekend. I want to play. I don’t think I’ve ever had an injury as frustrating as this one, where it’s taken this long.”

Given this news don’t expect to see Briere in the lineup tomorrow in Carolina. Surprisingly the Flyers have played well without Briere, winning their last five games and going 8-2-1 …

    • "Personally, from my experience, it's not fun. It's a frustrating thing, especially for a guy who runs, who needs his legs, who needs his speed. Hopefully, it's not as bad as mine.''
