Embattled New York Giants’ widereceiver Plaxico Burress’ season is officially over today, as the team announced he has been suspended for four games and placed on the non-football injury list. The suspension is officially for conduct detrimental to the team.

The aforementioned conduct was the accidental shooting of himself in the right thigh in a New York City nightclub on Friday night.

Burress has almost certainly played his last game as a Giant, and very well could have played his last game in the National Football League.

He was charged with illegal gun possession on Monday, a charge that carries a sentence of three-to-five years in jail. While most legal experts believe he will not face actual jail time, the incident has angered New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Gun control has been a cornerstone issue for the self-proclaimed New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan and he could pressure NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to take decisive league action against Burress. Bloomberg is also angry at the nightclub, the Latin Quarter, for allowing Burress to enter with a gun, as well as New York Presbyterian Hospital for not reporting the gunshot wound to the New York Police Department.

During a conversation with Goodell and Giants’ owner John Mara, Bloomberg reportedly expressed his frustration over the team’s handling of the situation, saying that the law instructs that if

“you see something, you got to call the cops. That’s the thing you should do.”

While we certainly do not wish this type of situation upon anyone, from a purely football perspective, this is good news for the Eagles, as Burress is the #2 receiver on a very potent Giants’ offense.
