After a week of negotiations, the Phillies and their manager, Charlie Manuel, have agreed on a contract
extension that will keep the championship skipper at the helm through 2011.
The new contract adds two additional years onto his current deal.
Manuel did not want to enter into this season a lame duck. This will now allow him to retire as a Phillies; to go out on his own terms.
Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. can now set his focus on talks that are believed to involve the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs. The trade is believed to send pitcher Jake Peavy to Chicago, infielder Mark DeRosa to Philadelphia, and J.A. Happ to San Diego, among others.
