Well you can’t say that the Phillies didn’t make any moves during this off-season’s winter meetings in Las Vegas.
It was announced late Wednesday night that the Phillies traded minor league catcher Jason Jaramillo to the
Pittsburgh Pirates for Ronny Paulino.
Jaramillo was the Phillies second-round draft pick in 2004 out of Oklahoma State and was once considered one of the team’s better prospects. However, he has not quite lived up to expectations and has since been overtaken in the depth chart by Lou Marson. He batted .266 with eight homers and 39 RBI in 115 games at Triple A Lehigh Valley last season.
Likewise, Paulino was once regarded as a top prospect in the Pirates’ farm system. But he began the season backing up Ryan Doumit, was sent to Triple A Indianapolis and sprained his ankle shortly after the demotion. He also had a hyperextended left elbow. Once he was healthy enough to play every day, Doumit had cemented himself as the starting catcher.
“We felt it would be better for [Paulino] to move on,” said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington. “He felt like he was an everyday guy who deserved to start.”
That being said, it’s doubtful that Pualino will find that opportunity with the Phillies either.
“As far as I’m concerned, Carlos Ruiz is our No. 1 catcher,” Phillies GM Ruben Amaro said. “It’s his job to lose, although these things tend to play themselves out throughout the season.”
Many expect Marson to backup Ruiz this season and step in as the starter should he falter. The odd man out appears to be Chris Coste, but Amaro dismissed speculation over where Coste and Marson would be playing come April.
“That’s not necessarily true,” he said. “It’s just a matter of creating competition, which is always good. It also gives us some depth and we can trade from depth. We also have options on [Coste and Paulino]. Sometimes you have to be selfish in this game.”
Coste has been mentioned a couple times as someone teams are interested in, notably the San Diego Padres. Should the Cubs not be able to get a deal done for pitcher Jake Peavy, the Phillies could step in and make a deal that could include Coste and pitcher J.A. Happ, among others.
