First I have to start off by saying I feel bad for Sean Avery. Yes, the player that everyone loves to hate is getting a raw deal by both the NHL and now the Dallas Stars. All for making comments to the media that were intended to hype up a game that no one outside of Dallas or Calgary really cared about.
Gary Bettman’s initial six-game suspension was shameful, but comments he made at a luncheon on Tuesday were even worse.
“To be perfectly honest I wouldn’t want to have to explain to my 12-year-old daughter what he said,” the commissioner said.
It’s actually laughable. First off Gary, you’re 12-year-old daughter probably knows what the term “sloppy seconds” means (don’t be so naive), and second off, what do you say to that same daughter when people like Todd Bertuzzi, Marty McSorley, and Chris Simon use their sticks as weapons?
To take it a step further, now the Dallas Stars have become the morality police and have forced Avery to attend anger management. They also said he’ll wear a Dallas Stars sweater on the ice. The situation has become overblown and ridiculous.
I have a solution to the Sean Avery Saga. If the Stars no longer want his services, send him to Philadelphia.
Sure it might be an initial shock for Flyers fans to welcome Mr. Avery here. He has pulled some stunts while with the Rangers that no Flyers fan likes, but I’ve always said Avery is the kind of guy you hate unless he’s on your team. He’s the kind of guy Flyers fans would love.
While he’s not the most finesse player who’s ever donned skates, Avery mixes it up and plays a very good physical game. He’s a clear upgrade over Riley Cote. He’s the best agitator the NHL has seen since Claude Lemieux, and can easily get under the skin of the likes of a Sidney Crosby, Scott Gomez, or Zach Parise. Also, despite what Mr. Bettman says, Avery is good for the NHL. His comments and antics give casual fans more of a reason to watch the NHL. Sure his antics do create a downside, but in the case of Avery, the ends justify the means.
A note to Brett Hull: When you read this, give Paul Holmgren a call. I know a troubled winger who he’ll take off your hands.

Ha! Avery would make a perfect Flyer.
