2009wbcWith the 2009 World Baseball Classic only three months away, rosters are beginning to assemble and rumors and grumblings are starting to be heard when it comes to who on the World Champion Phillies will be representing their respective countries.  So far there has only been one confirmation and that is that pitcher J.C. Romero will be taking the hill for his native Puerto Rico.

On the U.S. front there have been no confirmations, but some declines and rumors.  Chase Utley would be a no-brainer to be Team USA’s starting second baseman, but due to his recovery from hip surgery, he’s unavailable.  Brad Lidge was extended an offer, but declined due to the birth of his child.  Cole Hamels was also asked to be  part of the team, but after throwing 227 innings in 2008 he decided to rest his arm.  Ryan Howard has also been tabbed as a player, but has yet to notify manager Davey Johnson of his intentions.

That brings us to shortstop Jimmy Rollins.  The former MVP expressed his desire to join the 2006 team but was blocked by Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez.  With Rodriguez opting to play this year for the Dominican Republic, it opens the door for J-Roll to be Jeter’s backup on Team USA.

“Well, I have to make the final cut,” Rollins said last night following his appearance on HBO’s “Costas Now.” “I was in this position the last time and Mr. Rodriguez pretty much did it for me. Mr. All-World. It’s pretty tough to compete against a guy like that.”

Although Johnson hasn’t announced who will be the USA’s backup shortstop, Team USA third base coach and Hall of Fame Phillie Mike Schmidt already said Rollins is on the team.  Given the talent level the nod would have to go to Rollins, unless Johnson goes another route and chooses someone like Rangers shortstop Michael Young.

Sixteen teams will compete in the 2009 World Baseball Classic which runs from March 5-23.
