The Phillies announced the signing of veteran utilityman Miguel Cairo on Sunday. Cairo hit .249 with no home runs and 23 RBI in 221 at-bats for Seattle last season.

The 34-year old is one of the most versatile players in the game, playing every position but catcher and center field BASEBALL/last year. He is also a .284 career pinch hitter. Both of those attributes make him very appealing to a team in need of a right handed bat off the bench.

Cairo is going to have to compete with Eric Bruntlett, prospect Jason Donald and non-roster invitees Marcus Giles and Pablo Ozuna for an Opening Day roster spot.

The Phillies have also expressed interest in veteran thirdbaseman Nomar Garciaparra, should he decide to play this season.
