Pitcher Carlos Carrasco struggled Monday, despite the Phillies beating the Blue Jays 12-7 in exhibition play.

In his second outing of the spring, Carrasco pitched three innings, giving up five runs on three hits. He looked sharp in his first two innings, but the wheels came off in the fifth inning. The young hurler appeared to lose his composure after carasscoEric Bruntlett dropped a ball in center field that resulted in three-base error. Carrasco then proceeded to give up a double, a walk, and a homerun. Two batters later, he surrendered another homerun, totalling two in the inning.

The inning itself is not entirely notworthy, as it is only spring training, and early at that, but it could be telling how the young pitcher reacts to adversity. Hamels, for example, would most likely not have given up five runs after an error like that.

In other Phillies news, right fielder Jason Werth saw his first action of the Spring in a B-squad game today. Manager Charlie Manuel had been giving Werth some time off to start the spring in order to knock off some of the off-season rust. He then tweaked his shoulder during batting practice and was scratched from a game against the Rays on Saturday.

Jamie Moyer and Joe Blanton combined for seven scoreless innings in the B-squad game. It was the second outing of the spring for both. Moyer threw 57 pitches in three innings, striking out four while allowing two hits. Blanton threw 59 pitches in four innings, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out four. All told, Moyer has pitched five scoreless innings this spring, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out six and Blanton has allowed one run in five innings pitched this spring, allowing seven hits and no walks while striking out six.

The Phillies have purchased the contracts of righthander Dustin Cameron from the St. Paul Saints and catcher Brendan Akashian from the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League.

According to David Murphy of the Philadelphia Inquirer:

Cameron, 27, has spent the last three years pitching for various independent league teams. He most recently was a member of the St. Paul Saints, but never played a game for them. He was 3-2 with a 1.38 ERA in 34 appearances for the Pensacola Pelicans of the American Association last season. After being traded to the New Jersey Jackals, he posted a 7.07 ERA in 11 appearances.

Akashian led the Frontier League with a .448 on base percentage last season.

They will compete for spots in the bullpen, but will most likely end up in the minors.
