Ah, it’s good to get back to your roots every now and then isn’t it? That’s exactly what Phillies’ fans have been doing since Sunday night’s Opening Day loss to the Atlanta Braves.

PhilliesNationals10Brett Myers is back to his horrible self! Send him back to the minors!”

“This lineup is too lefty heavy! Mix it up!”

“Bring back Pat Burrell! Raul Ibanez is a bust!”

“Here we go again! Another 28 years of losing!”

“Booooooo!”

It’s nice, after living high on the hog for five months to come back to reality, isn’t it?

It has been talked about incessantly for the past day and a half how the Phillies’ fans waited just 17 minutes into their first game as defending champions to start booing again, which has just allowed the national media to perpetutate the overblown reputation that Philly fans are nothing but mean booers who constantly hate on their teams.

For the record, I was at the game, and it was at best a smattering of boos. The entire stadium wasn’t booing, but there definitely were some expressing their displeasure. That being said, it was an ugly game. Yea, I know, we had just raised the World Series banner, and welcomed only our second defending champion in team history. But it was cold, and late, and it was an ugly game.

The actual game was an incredible letdown after such an emotional high of a pregame. Myers pitched two very poor innings to start the game and the offense failed to show up until the ninth inning.

Myers did settle down and regained his composure after those first two innings to pitch a relatively strong game. This team has too much offensive talent and will obviously play better as the season progresses. And the Phillies have lost each of their past three Opening Days, so losing this year is no cause for concern.

Was it a letdown after such a triumphant return? Absolutely. Is it worth freaking out over? Of course not. As everyone from Charlie Manuel to Jimmy Rollins to Clay Condrey said after the game, we have 161 more games to go. It’s a long season. Let’s all take a collective deep breath and remind ourselves that the Phillies, after getting shallacked by the lowly Washington Nationals on Opening Day last year, went on to win the World Series.

I’d gladly trade every Opening Day from here on out for a few more World Series Championships, wouldn’t you?
