Phillies’ catcher Carlos Ruiz suffered a right oblique muscle strain on Friday after chasing a pop-fly and was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday.
“I know it’s early in the season and we have a lot of games left, but I don’t want to be on the DL,” Ruiz said. “But there’s nothing I can do. I have no control over that.”
Ruiz is eligible to come off the DL on April 26, but it is unclear yet whether or not he will be healthy enough to come back then. GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. said that the team would know more after Ruiz undergoes an MRI exam on Monday.
The Phillies have called up catcher Lou Marson to back up Chris Coste.
Even though he was called up as a backup, Marson is expected to get some playing time.
“Unless Coste wants to — he can get in there tonight and take off,” said manager Charlie Manuel. “I won’t hold him back. If he hits and we play good and everything … I’ll play Marson some, but I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
Marson was just 1 for 20 in Spring Training, but went 2 for 4 with a homerun in his only major league game last season.
“I feel like I’ve had some good at-bats,” Marson said. “With regular at-bats, I feel like I will be successful.”
With a day game today, following a night game on Saturday, Marson could find himself starting already.
