The Flyers have picked up where they left off from last season’s playoffs: they lost game one.
The Flyers lost Game one in all three of their playoff series last year. So hopefully this bodes well for things to come, because the Orange and Black did not look good against the Penguins at Mellon Arena.
The Pens’ two stars, Sydney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each had a goal and an assist, and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury dominated one of the NHL’s best offenses.
The Flyers couldn’t stay out of the penalty box, or their own zone. Fleury spent a lot of the game doing nothing as the Penguins kept the puck in front of the struggling Marty Biron.
Crosby started things off with a powerplay goal just 4:41 into the first period on assists from Malkin and Sergei Gonchar, who scored half of his points this season on the powerplay.
Tyler Kennedy made it 2-0 just after the start of the second period on a wristshot from Jordan Staal, the game’s First Star. This would ultimately be the game winner.
The Penguins’ third goal came on a Malkin backhand a little over six minutes into the third period. The Flyers did a good job containing Malkin all game, until that goal anyway.
The game was fully out of reach when Mark Eaton sailed a slapshot passed an embattled Biron to make it 4-0.
The Flyers would eventually make it on the board on a Simon Gagne powerplay goal with less than five minutes to go in the game. It was a moot point by that point.
Penguins fans were chanting “Go home, Fly-ers!” throughout the end of the game, waving thousands of white rally towels. Unfortunately, the Flyers have to do it all over again on Friday. The puck drops at 7:00 PM.
