After it looked like the Phillies would lose their fourth straight game, Raul Ibanez ripped victory from the cliched jaws of defeat with a two-run walkoff homerun.
The Phils once again had to power back after a poor outing by their starting pitcher. Today’s bad pitcher of the moment was Chan Ho Park, who pitched five innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, bringing his ERA to a dismal 8.68.
Park looked good through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third. Everth Cabrera started the inning with an infield hit and was sacrificed over to second by pitcher Josh Greer. Cabrera then scored on an RBI-single by Jody Gerut.
With Gerut on first, second baseman Edgar Gonzalez belted a triple to left, scoring Gerut. Brian Giles, who ended Brad Lidge’s saves streak just a little over 12 hours earlier, knocked in Gonzalez with a ground out.
The Padres would tack on another run two innings later with a solo-shot by Adrian Gonzalez.
Things again looked bleak for the Fightin Phils. But as they did so often last season, the Phillies battled back, chipping away at the 4-0 lead, in vintage Phillies fashion: the homerun.
Chase Utley followed up Gonzalez’s homerun the next inning with a two-run homer of his own.
Two innings later, Jimmy Rollins led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a pinch hit homerun, his first of the season.
After Clay Condrey set the Padres down in order in the top of the ninth, the Phillies came up down a run and staring their fourth straight loss in the face.
Ryan Howard, who had a stellar day defensively, led off the inning with a single to center. That set the stage for the walk-off homerun by Raul Ibanez, who is batting .386 on the year with five homeruns and 10 RBIs. While many Phillies fans will continue to miss Pat Burrell for the guy that he is, Ibanez has more than filled his shoes on the field.
“Ibanez got a big hit didn’t he? We used the home-run ball to score. Good win for us. Got to get into a regular routine,” manager Charlie Manuel said.
Perhaps the biggest hit of all came immediately after the game during the postgame interview, who was the victim of a Shane Victorino shaving cream pie.
“They got me good,” said Ibanez. “They got me real good and I was not ready for it. After a game like that I don’t care what they put in it. They can spit in it and I’ll take it.”
The Phillies look to even the series Monday at 7:05.
