Charlie Manuel has chosen outfielder Jayson Werth to replace the injured Carlos Beltran on the NL All Star team.
The move comes as a surprise as the Phillies already have two outfielders (Raul Ibanez and Shane Victorino) on the team, but it seems that Manuel has more pull than previously thought.
It was generally believed that Manuel would pick from Giants’ third baseman Pablo Sandoval (.328, 13 homers, 48 RBIs), Dodgers’ outfielder Matt Kemp (.319, 10, 46, 19 sb), and Arizona third baseman Mark Reynolds (.262, 24, 62, 15 sb), all of which were Final Vote contenders with Victorino.
Werth, who has four homeruns in as many games, is batting .268 on the season with 20 homeruns, 54 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. He joins Ibanez, Victorino, second baseman Chase Utley, and first baseman Ryan Howard on the NL squad. According to Phillies’ beat writer Todd Zolecki, it is the first time the Phillies have sent five players to the All Star game since 1995 when they sent Darren Daulton, Lenny Dykstra, Tyler Green, Mickey Morandini and Heathcliff Slocumb.

Honorable Eric K. Shinseki, Secretary
United States Department of Veterans Affairs
810 Vermont Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20420
Dear Secretary Shinseki,
We would like to formally request that the Department of Veterans Affairs conduct a new, thorough, statistical review of veterans in South Jersey, including Ocean County. We firmly believe that an updated statistical analysis will show that the South Jersey region necessitates its own VA Medical Center to meet the needs of the rapidly growing veteran population in this area.
After storming the shores of Omaha Beach, surviving the destruction of Pearl Harbor, fighting for freedom in Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq and Afghanistan, South Jersey veterans deserve the best possible care that we can provide them. They risked their lives and sacrificed their health to protect our freedoms and our nation the same as Delaware, Pennsylvania and North Jersey veterans; they should not have to sacrifice their healthcare as a result of where they have chosen to spend their lives enjoying the freedom that they fought so hard for.
The current clinic facilities in Vineland, Ventnor and Cape May simply do not provide the adequate level of care that these brave men and women deserve. As a result, they are forced to travel hours away to Wilmington, Philadelphia, and East Orange. We have sick and elderly veterans in their 70s, 80s and 90s, who were at Iwo Jima, who stormed the beaches of Normandy, forced to find public bus transportation to facilities hours away.
We think you can agree, this is, simply put, unacceptable.
As such, we all firmly believe that the Kessler Memorial Hospital facility in the Town of Hammonton, Atlantic County, would be the perfect fit for our South Jersey veterans. Hammonton is conveniently located to the surrounding counties of Ocean, Gloucester, Camden, Salem, Cumberland, Cape May, and of course Atlantic.
For years, we have fought for a veteran’s hospital in the South Jersey region as our veterans continue to be underserved. It is unacceptable that those men and women that put their own lives on the line to protect our freedom should struggle to find quality healthcare near their home. We ask that you conduct a thorough review of the needs of South Jersey veterans. We are confident you will see that there is an overwhelming need for a medical center in South Jersey.
If we can be of any assistance to you or your staff, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Jeff Van Drew Christopher J. Connors Jim Whelan
