The Phillies made baseball history Thursday night, becoming just the second team in league history to ever have four different players hit 20 homeruns or more before the All Star break.
Chase Utley and Jayson Werth each hit their 20th of the season Thursday night against the Cincinnati Reds. Utley hit an inside-the-park homerun in the third inning, his ball careening off the 409-foot sign in deep center.
Werth’s 20 of the season came in the sixth inning, putting the Phillies up 9-6 on their way to their sixth win in seven games. It was Werth’s fourth homerun in as many days, and his seventh in 12 games.
Outfielder Raul Ibanez currently has 22 homeruns, and first baseman Ryan Howard has 21. All four players have been named to the 2009 NL All Star team, as well as outfielder Shane Victorino.
The only other team in major league history to have four 20 homerun guys before the All Star break was the 2000 Toronto Blue Jays.
