Pending a physical, Pedro Martinez will be the next member of the Phillies‘ pitching staff.

PedroMartinez is reportedly flying to Philly today and will undergo the requisite physical in the next 24 hours.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, the deal is worth much less than the $5 million Martinez was asking for before the season began. While actual numbers have yet to be disclosed, it is reportedly for even less than a prorated $5 million contract.

“When people find out what the money is, they’re going to be surprised,” said one source to Rosenthal with knowledge of the discussions. “It’s not about the money.”

The Phillies watched Martinez pitch in two separate outings last week at the team’s baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, and apparently have come away quite impressed. General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. flew down to the DR to witness the second outing first hand. The Phillies’ scouting department and front office have apparently seen something in Pedro that no one else has, as several times have already passed on the aging future Hall-of-Famer. That being said, he certainly has the capability to make the Phillies’ rotation, whose average ERA of 4.98 is the third worst in the National League, better. But maybe not right away.

According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, we should not expect Pedro to jump into the starting rotation right away. Zolecki expects Martinez to spend some time in the minors first, as he has yet to pitch this season, in a scenario reminiscient of Roger Clemens’ late starts earlier this decade.

Hopefully Pedro will be able to match Clemens’ mid-season forays in the National League, in which he never posted an ERA above 2.98 with the Houston Astros.
