The title of this post says it all. The Phillies, even when they win, suck against the Giants this season.

In six games so far this season, the Phillies are 2-4, having been outscored 11-21 over that span.

The Phillies have been outscored by 10 runs by a team that is not in the top 10 of any NL hitting category except for batting average, which they’re 10th.

Phillies Giants BaseballThe Phillies are either first or second in almost every hitting category, including slugging percentage, home runs, RBIs, runs and total bases. In many of those categories, the Giants are last or second to last in the league.

While the Giants have had a couple big offensive outings against the Phillies this year (including two separate seven run outbursts), the story is more about the Phillies lack  of hitting than it is about San Francisco’s ability to put runs on the board.

The Phillies have failed to score more than three runs in four of the six games between the two teams this season. They were able to win Tuesday night’s game simply because Cole Hamels threw a complete game shutout, as the Phillies were able to muster just one run.

The Phillies have played a total of 130 games this season, six of which have been against the Giants. In the 124 games against teams not based in San Francisco, the Phillies average 5.3 runs, 9.01 hits, 1.5 home runs, 5.1 RBIs, 3.8 walks and 7.2 strikeouts a game. In the six games against the Giants, the Phillies average 1.8 runs, 6.5 hits, 0.5 home runs, 1.7 RBIs, 2.3 walks and 7.2 strikeouts.

The Phillies average over four less runs a game against the Giants then they do against the rest of the majors. In two games this series against the Giants’ two worst (if you can call them that) pitchers, the Phillies scored one run on 10 hits. Of those 10 hits, only two were for extra bases. However, they managed to strikeout 14 times and only walk four times.

During the six games against the Giants so far this season, Ryan Howard is batting .217 with 11 strikeouts; Chase Utley is batting .142 with one RBI; Shane Victorino has one hit in 10 at bats; however, Raul Ibanez wins the crown with one hit in 15 at bats for a .067 average with just one RBI against San Francisco this season.

Brad Penny was garbage with the Red Sox this year, but pitched Wednesday like the guy who won 16 games in both 2006 and 2007, and if he pitches like that for the rest of year, the Giants now have arguably the scariest pitching rotation in recent memory.

So can we please all agree now that we want to avoid playing the Giants in the playoffs?
