For the second time in his career A.J. Feeley, an eight year veteran with an average QB rating of 69.0, is no longer an Eagle. He was cut late Sunday to make room for Antonio Dixon, who was picked up off of waivers.
It became likely that Feeley would leave Philadelphia when Michael Vick was signed. This signaled that Andy Reed is still a believer in the mobile quarterback with the threat of a run. This made Kevin Kolb the air apparent to the immobile back up role currently occupied by Feeley. Other notable former Eagles in this position were Koy and Ty Detmer. Since both Donovan McNabb and Vick are seasoned veterans, Feeley had basically out lasted his usefulness to the Eagles.
A sign that this move was impending is the fact that the Eagles couldn’t deal him. In a league full of rookie, injury prone and unproven quarterbacks, a veteran with experience in the West Coast Offense is still a valued commodity.
Since Feeley is a vested veteran he won’t need to pass through waivers and will be able to sign with any team. While New England does seem like a good choice, don’t be surprised to see A.J. stay in the NFC where, if not Brett Favre’s second rise from the ashes, perennial underachiever Sage Rosenfels may well have gotten a start. Add that to the strong possibility that the road to the playoffs could very well lead through Philadelphia and you could see how this 5th rounder out of Oregon could be considered a steal.
In other notable roster news it looks like Danny Amendola’s (WR #11) performance against the Jets was enough to earn him a spot on the practice squad, where he’s been since signing as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 2008. If he can harness his speed he could make an excellent addition to the Eagles’ receiving core.
