For those people who thought sitting Brian Westbrook would be a good idea last night against the Bears, you got your wish, however, the outcome was a far cry than what had been expected. Last nights 24-20 loss at the hands of Chicago lie directly at the feet of Westbrook, who was sorely missed during a fourth quarter goal line stand that prevented The Eagles from taking the win and keeping pace in the ultr competitive NFC East.

With the Redskins beating the Cowboys yesterday afternoon, the Eagles are suddenly in last place in the NFC East, a game behind Washington and Dallas, 1 1/2 games behind the defending Super Bowl Champs, NY Giants.

The bears tried giving the game away on several occasions, with 4 turnovers that led to only 6 points for the birds who were held to just 6 points in the second half.

Also missing from the Birds lineup last night was Right Guard Shawn Andrews. Andres was missed throughout the game, as the Eagles had a difficult time establishing the run early on, relying on end arounds from (2 rushes 35yrds) to get any traction against the tough Chicago D.

He was also sorely missed on that final goal line stand that ultimately ended the game with just over 3 minutes left.

This loss will cause a lot of people to panic in Philly, and no doubt it was a frustrating loss. It is however, early in the season, and the Birds have gotten off to much worse starts then this. They have a huge game this Sunday at 1pm vs. the Redskins which now does turn into one of those early season “must win” games. A loss to the Redskins won’t end the season, but it certainly would put the Birds in a very tough whole to climb out of the cellar in the toughest division in football.

1) Dallas: Record 3-0 (Win vs Packers 27-16): Last weeks rank: #1: They won in Green Bay for the first time, but it’s not the same as winning there in December. Still, they won comfortably, despite a slow start from Romo.

2) New York Giants: Record 3-0 (Beat the Bengals in OT 26-23) Last weeks rank #2: Disappointing win here, but give the Bengals credit, they showed what they’re capable of. Giants stayed with it and finally broke the D down in OT.

3) Philadelphia: Record 2-1 (Beat Steelers 15-6): Last weeks rank: #5: Lose Westbrook for 3 quarters, Lose McNabb for a series and still win against a tough team. This is an interesting and possibly the most well rounded. As long as Westbrook and McNabb stay healthy. Welcome back Dawk.

4) Denver: Record 3-0 (Beat the Saints 34-32) Last weeks rank: #12: The league’s new version of the Colts exploded again… and nearly lost again. The D has issues but the O is pretty sick.

5) Tennessee: Record 3-0 (Beat Houston 31-12) Last weeks rank: #9: Wow, they are better with Collins.

6) Green Bay: Record 2-1 (Lost to Cowboys 27-16) Last weeks rank: #4: They come back down to earth a little this week, but it wasn’t a whooping. They’ll continue to improve, their just not there yet.

7) Buffalo: Record 3-0 (Beat Raiders 24-23) Last weeks rank: #6: Big scare here as they nearly lost to one of the worst teams in the league. They should get a chance to oil their wheels this week against the Rams.

Pittsburgh: Record 2-1 (Lost to Eagles 15-6) Last weeks rank: #3: Got a beat down in Philly last week. Should be looking to lay the wood on the Ravens this week but may be too banged up to do it.

9) San Diego: record: 1-2 (Beat the Jets 48-29): Last weeks rank: #13: Finally! LT is still hurting and can’t cut to his left, but that doesn’t mean this team is dangerous especially with Darren Sproles getting more exposure.

10) Jacksonville: record: 1-2 (Beat the Colts 23-21): Last weeks rank #14: Why the Hell does it take you so long to figure out you need to the RUN THE BALL every year Del Rio?

11) Tampa Bay: Record 2-1 (Beat the Bears 27-24 in OT) Last weeks rank: #19: Their not going to continue winning with Greise throwing 342 times a game.

12) Indianapolis: Record 1-2 (Lost to Jags 23-21 ): Last weeks rank: #7: Not sure what the problem is here, I won’t totally give up on them, but they just aren’t the same. I guess Eli won’t give Peyton’s Mojo back.

13) Washington: Record 2-1 (Beat the Cards 24-17) Last weeks rank: #18: Jason Campbell has really matured, the D is playing on fire. I’m impressed, but not sold yet.

14) Arizona: Record 2-1 (Lost to Skins 24-17) Last weeks rank: #11: Yeah, this is just what Arizona does. Lose to teams they shouldn’t lose to.

15) New Orleans: Record 1-2 (Lost to Denver 34-32): Last weeks rank: #10: This is just a tough start. No excuses, last week was horrible, and this team is not as good as people made them out to be. But I still think they’ll make the playoffs. Here’s a shocker… Shockey’s hurt.

16) Miami: Record 1-2 (Beat the Pats 38-13) Last weeks rank #19: Ronnie Brown looks healthy and Ricky Williams does too. This is what I expected to see at the beginning of the season. Hopefully this gives them the momentum they need.

17) Chicago: Record 1-2 (Lost to Bucs 27-24 in OT) Last weeks rank: #16: Wow, they need a QB so bad.

18) New England: Record 2-1 (Lost to Miami 38-13): Last weeks rank: #8: Wow, well guess that just about wraps up your season Boston. HAHA!

19) Carolina: Record 2-1 (Lost to the Vikings 20-10) Last Weeks Rank: #15: Finally reality is starting to kick in.

20) Atlanta: Record 2-1 (Beat the Chiefs 38-14) Last weeks rank: #23: The coaching is playing this right. Let Turner beat down the D and Ryan hit receiver downfield when the D loads up on the line.

21) Baltimore: Record 2-0 (Beat the Browns 28-10) Last weeks rank: #24: Not bad for a special teams coach. I don’t expect the clean record to last past this week, but this is almost more wins then I thought they’d get all season.

22) Minnesota: Record 1-2 (Beat the Panthers 20-10) Last weeks rank: #21: Big Gus is enough to keep this team steady, but they won’t go far with him.

23) New York Jets: Record 1-2 (Lost to Chargers 48-29) Last weeks rank: #20: Okay, Brett’s not the answer here, but they played a team really needed to win. I don’t think they’re this bad at the end of the year, but they are right now.

24) San Francisco: Record 2-1 (Beat the Lions 31-13) Last weeks rank: 27: Damn, J.T. Ain’t bad.

25) Houston: Record 0-2 (Lost to Titans 31-12): Last weeks rank #17: Wow, not much better then in their first year in the league. Hopefully when they are able to practice at home they can get it together… but it’s a long road to hoe for these guys.

26) Seattle: Record 1-2 (Beat the Rams 37-13) Last weeks rank: #32: Um, I can’t give too much credence to this. It was a good practice session though.

27) Cincinnati: Record 0-3 (Lost to Giants 26-23 in OT) Last weeks rank: #25: They showed a lot by not laying down to a tough team. Nobody expected this, and it’s good to see some life. But Marvin Lewis is still teetering on the unemployment line.

28) Oakland: Record 1-2 (Lost to the Bills 24-23) Last weeks rank: #26: Al Davis is a schmuck.

29) Cleveland: Record 0-3 (Lost to Ravens 28-10) Last weeks rank: #22: Awful, rebuild.

30) Detroit: Record 0-3 (Lost to the Niners 31-13) Last weeks rank: #29: Brutally Bad.

31) St. Louis: Record 0-3 (Lost to Seattle 37-13) Last weeks rank: #30: Wow, Steven Jackson and Torry Holt just gotta be pissed.

32) Kansas City: Record 0-3 (Lost to the Raiders 38-13) Last weeks rank: #32: Hey, you’re better then Rams…. Oh wait.

Last night the Philadelphia Eagles went into Texas stadium for the last time. They’ve played many amazing games in the stadium over the past 30 years or so, but none quite this one. In the end, it was a 41-37 loss, to their most bitter rivals, the Dallas Cowboys but in truth it was a game to build on.

In probably the most memorable Monday Night Football game in some time, the Eagles and Cowboys changed leads on 7 different occasions. Their were hard hits, fumbles in the endzone, boneheaded plays, beautiful deep passes, lots of yardage and every player left it all on the field. Led by Tony Romo, the Cowboys immediately made their mark with their first possession. Trailing 3-0 after the Eagles opened with a field goal on their drive, the Cowboys countered with a 72 yard bomb in which Sean Considine and Sheldon Brown dropped coverage on Terrell Owens.

After David Akers second field goal, the Eagles kicked the ball to Felix Jones who promptly ran it back 98 yards for another Dallas TD and 14-6 lead. It was apparent that this was going to be high scoring affair and that the Birds were in trouble. But Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook drove the Eagles down the field. On a pass from McNabb towards the end zone, Greg Lewis did a remarkable job of duping the ref’s into thinking he was being held, when it was in fact Lewis that was doing the holding. This led to a McNabb to Westbrook 6 yard TD Pass to bring the Eagle to within 14-13.

The next series started with the Cowboys deep in their own territory and Romo made a classic miscue of fumbling the snap in the end zone which was recovered by Chris Gocong for an Eagles TD.

Romo came back on the ensuing series however and reconnected with T.O. for another TD, this one after a long drive got them to the Eagles 4 yard line.

And then the game started getting really weird. On, a play that will be remembered for the rest of his career, DeSean Jackson, the Eagles rookie sensation took in a beautiful over the shoulder pass from McNabb and simply dropped the ball at the 1 yard line as he ran into the end zone with an apparent TD. Dallas Challenged and fortunately for the Eagles, they got the ball back at the 1 where Westbrook punched it in for a 30- 21 lead. At the half, the score was Eagles 30- 24 and the commentators on ESPN were already praising it as one of the best ever.

The second half was a much different place, with both offenses utilizing the run more often and Marion Barber taking control of the pace. However, it was not until a McNabb to Westbrook hand off flub fell into the hands of Dallas, who promptly took their first turnover downfield for a TD and 41-37 lead.

McNabb and the Eagles were shut down by the Cowboys to end the game. Dallas won the game, but it is my thought that Eagles put the rest of the league on notice. McNabb is healthy, he’s got a brand new, albeit immature weapon in Jackson, and of course Westbrook. Putting this game in perspective, The Eagles have a lot to build on. They go on to face the Steelers next week, which should be a great test to see how they respond, but they’ve certainly given us reason to hope.

They visit Green Bay next week, in another top marquee match-up that could be another playoff preview and their next big test.

2) New York Giants: Record 2-0 (Beat the Rams 41-13) Last weeks rank #5: Took a while to get started but they exploded in the second half and took care of business. They should have another fun one this week vs. the Bengals.

3) Pittsburgh: Record 2-0 (Beat Ceveland 10-6) Last weeks rank: 2: Tough win in nasty conditions against a team that looks underrated. They’ll get their first real test when they visit Philadelphia this week.

4) Green Bay: Record 2-0) (Beat Detroit 48-25) Last weeks rank: #7: Imagine what this team could have done with Aaron Rodgers behind center last year. My god, he looks like he’s the real deal, but faces a he test against Dallas next week.

5) Philadelphia: Record 1-1 (Lost to Cowboys 41-37): Last weeks rank: #3: The Eagles had their popcorn ready but so did T.O. and the Cowboys. A tough loss that has to be taken into perspective. They’ve sent a message to the rest of the league.

6) Buffalo: Record 2-0 (Beat Jaguars 20-16) Last weeks rank: #12: Another impressive win this week. This is the team that is going to continue to surprise everyone this year. Lets see if they play down to the competition this week vs. the Raiders

7) Indianapolis: Record 1-1 (Beat the Vikings 18-15 ): Last weeks rank: #10: Apparently Peyton Manning has decided to reinvent himself as the most successful QB to get his team in Field Goal position. Something is obviously not clicking here. They play another tough D in Jacksonville next week.

New England: Record 2-0 (Beat the Jets 19-10): Last weeks rank: #14: Impressive in light of losing Brady. They couldn’t punch it in, but Cassell looks like a young, well… Tom Brady. Just one game, but not bad.

9) Tennessee: Record 2-0 (Beat the Bengals 24-7) Last weeks rank: #9: I actually think their better without Young, at least for now. Until he gets his head straightened out (and he may never do that) their better off riding Collins and the running game.

10) New Orleans: Record 1-1 (Lost to Washington 29-24): Last weeks rank: #4: Terrible loss to the Redskins in which the offense really missed Marques Colston. That said, it shouldn’t have been enough for them to lose to team like the Skins.

11) Arizona: Record 2-0 (Beat the Dolphins 31-10) Last weeks rank: #16: Kurt Warner is a happy man in Arizona and his wife has kept her mouth shut, which is always good. They’ve played two bad teams but beat them both impressively.

12) Denver: Record 2-0 (Beat the Chargers 39-38) Last weeks rank: #18: Well, they got away with one here, but they still showed a lot in this… we’ll call it a “Lin” instead of “Win”. Cutler’s got the goods, but he’s still has a little ways to go before he starts to dominate.

13) San Diego: record: 0-2 (Lost to Denver 39-38): Last weeks rank: #6: Wow, they was robbed, but they gave this game before the Jay Cutler fumble. They did show flashes of what was expected of them, but Norv Turner will drive Chargers fans mad for the rest of the season. Darren Sproles is Michael Turner 2.0.

14) Jacksonville: record: 0-2 (Lost to Buffalo 20-16): Last weeks rank #8: What has Jack Del Rio really done for this team? What? Only hopeful outlook is that this is the same way they started out last year. I feel they will make their way back up, but only when Del Rio remembers to RUN the ball. Gerrard is a game manager, not a game maker.

15) Carolina: Record 2-0 (Beat the Bears 20-17) Last weeks rank: #27: God, this team just always finds themselves in the mix. I just can’t buy into them yet. That said, looks like the competition ‘aint what it’s cracked up to be.

16) Chicago: Record 1-1 (Lost to Panthers 20-17) Last weeks rank: #13: Well, this was more like the Bears. Inconsistent and maddeningly poor production from offense.

17) Houston: Record 0-1 (PPD vs. Ravens): Last weeks rank #11:

18) Washington: Record 1-1 (Beat the Saints 29-24) Last weeks rank: #28: Jason Campbell looked great against a shaky D, and every year I think Portis is done, he just keeps doing it.

19) Tampa Bay: Record 1-1 (Beat the Falcons 24-9) Last weeks rank: #20: They came back from a tough loss last week and dominated the young Falcons. Good win and Greise looks like he can handle the reigns. Good matchup this week vs. the Bears

20) New York Jets: Record 1-1 (Lost to Patriots 19-10) Last weeks rank: #17: This is the other side of Brett, Jets fans. And it aint pretty, this is a game they have to win to be taken seriously.

21) Minnesota: Record 0-2 (Lost to Colts 18-15) Last weeks rank: #25: Tavaris Jackson is not an NFL Qb. Something has to be done, this team coulda been a contenda.

22) Cleveland: Record 0-2 (Lost to Steelers 10-6) Last weeks rank: #15: This team is starting to turn sour. They’ve played two of the best teams in the league at this point but played poorly in both. Anderson hasn’t played well at all in his last 7 games.

23) Atlanta: Record 1-1 (Lost to Bucs 24-9) Last weeks rank: #22: Maybe Michael Turner isn’t the real deal and Matt Ryan doesn’t look so good.

24) Baltimore: Record 1-0 (PPD vs Texans) Last weeks rank: 24

25) Cincinnati: Record 0-2 (Lost to Bengals 24-7) Last weeks rank: #21: Blow it up. I’m sure you can get some dynamite from one of the players.

26) Oakland: Record 1-1 (Beat the Chiefs 23-8) Last weeks rank: #26: Lane Kiffin’s gonna get fired, which is too bad because no one could do any better. McFadden is impressive.

27) San Francisco: Record 1-1 (Beat the Seahawks 33-30) Last weeks rank: 29: Well, well, well… look at J.T. O’Sullivan. The Irish are going crazy this week. Lets see him do it against a team that doesn’t suck like Seattle.

28) Miami: Record 0-2 (Lost to Cards 31-10) Last weeks rank #19: Okay, Im sorry…this team still sucks.

29) Detroit: Record 0-2 (Lost to Green Bay 48-25) Last weeks rank: #30: Calvin Johnson provides some punch. That’s about it.

30) St. Louis: Record 0-2 (Lost to the Giants 41-13) Last weeks rank: #23: Blow up #2, this team has talent but no cohesion and apparently no coaching either.

31) Seattle: Record 0-2 (Lost to the Bills 10-34) Last weeks rank: #32: Wow, I was half joking when I ranked them #32 last week. Not joking at all this week.

32) Kansas City: Record 0-2 (Lost to the Raiders 23-8) Last weeks rank: #29: There is nothing on this team worth talking about. Just ask Larry Johnson.

With the birth of DeSean Jackson on the Philadelphia Football scene last week, I thought it would be fun to go back and take a look at a wide receiver who made not quite the impact Jackson has, but had a very productive career nonetheless. This player was similar to Jackson in two ways. He stood 5’11″ and weighed 181pbs when he was drafted out of Purdue University in the 1990 draft and also was the last Eagles rookiw wide reciever to start a game. This guys name was… Calvin Williams.

Williams was the 3rd receiver drafted in the 1990 draft by Buddy Ryan, who chose Mike Bellamy and Fred Barnett ahead of Williams. But injuries to Mike Quick, the departure of Chris Carter, and a Keith Jackson holdout forced the Eagles to not only use Williams but also Barnett in a starters capacity. However, their transition from rookie to starters was not as seamless as Jackson’s has been to date.

“We were the topic of a lot of conversation, most of it bad,” Williams said. “No one knew us. We were untested, even to Randall. There wasn’t a lot expected of us.”

But both players helped to propel the Eagles into the playoffs after starting the season with 1 -3 start.

Barnett would become the future All Pro, but Williams made a major impact with the Eagles passing game. He had two season of 60 or more catches and led the Eagles with 10 TD’s in 1993. Williams played seven season for the Eagles (playing the last 14 games of his career with the Baltimore Ravens (the town he grew up in), before retiring in 1996. He finished his Eagles career ranked ninth on the all time receptions list, just behind his friend Barnett.

2) Pittsburgh: Record 1-0 (Beat Houston 38-17) Last weeks rank: #8: Willie Parker is back and hasn’t missed a beat. Rothlisberger has continued to improve, and Timlin might be the best coach in the NFL. I still believe Houston is a good team, so I give them the edge here over Philly.

3) Philadelphia: Record 1-0 (Beat the Rams 38-3): Last weeks rank: #7: The most impressive display from offense, defense, and special teams in week 1. This team is much better then anyone thought. DeSean Jackson is the real deal and completely opens up the offense. But the real story here as usual is the D. Jackson, Holt, Bulger and Pace are still very talented, and they rendered each of them ineffective.

4) New Orleans: Record 1-0 (Beat the Bucs 24-20): Last weeks rank: #6: Took a while to get warmed up, but the O exploded in the second half. They need Mcallister to contribute if they really want to contend though.

5) New York Giants: Record 1-0 (Beat the Skins 16-7) Ho hum, nothing new here. The D looks like it hasn’t missed a beat despite losing so many players to injury and retirement. I can’t believe Coughlin actually turned this mess around.

6) Green Bay: Record: 1 -0 (Beat the Vikings 24-19) Last weeks rank: #9: People will probably over emphasize Rodgers performance, but he looks like something to build with for sure. He played a very tough D and backed up his talk, so you gotta like that.

7) Tennessee: Record 1-0 (Beat the Jags 17-10) Last weeks rank: #14: They always play the Jags tough, no surprise here. Now Young’s out for 4 weeks and they might actually improve without him.

Jacksonville: record: 0-1 (Lost to Tennessee 17-10): Last weeks rank #2: Run the damn ball Del Rio! It ‘aint that hard to figure out.

9) Buffalo: Record 1-0 (Beat the Seahawks 34-10) Last weeks rank: #15: Not so much of a shocker here. Seattle sucks. Still an overly impressive and unexpected win from this up and coming team. I really didn’t think they’d be close to this level coming into last year.

10) Indianapolis: Record 0-1 (Lost to Bears 29-13 ): Last weeks rank: #5: Something told me they weren’t going to be so hot this year… I just didn’t think they’d be this cold. Should be interesting to see how they respond.

11) San Diego: record: 0-1 (Lost to Carolina 26-24): Last weeks rank: #1: Oops, so much for the Chargers. Somehow, I completely forgot that Norv Turner coached this team. Why does he have job? Awful debut..

12) Denver: Record: 1-0 : (Beat the Raiders 41-14) Last weeks rank: #18: Wow, so Cutler is not Jake the Snake after all? Of course, this was against Oakland. Still, you can’t be less then impressed with that total domination.

13) Chicago: Record 1-0 (Beat the Colts 29-13) Last weeks rank: #27: I’d like to apologize to Brian Urlacher. Man he looked pissed even after the Game. Who cares who the QB is… this D is sickening, and Matt Forte is the answer at RB.

14): New York Jets: Record 1-0 (Beat the Dolphins 20-14) Last weeks rank: #19: The margin of victory was larger then the score shows. Brett is back throwing ducks for TD’s, but he obviously has a deal with the Devil. Impressed.

15) New England: Record 1-0 (Win over K.C. 17-10): Last weeks rank: #4: Karma’s a bitch ‘aint it Belichek? So long Pats, no recovering from this one. For all those who picked up Matt Cassell on Sunday night… HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

16) Arizona: Record 1-0 (Beat the Niners 23-13) Last weeks rank: #20: They did what they’re supposed to do! Win. Solid win over a weak opponent. Keep your eyes on this team.

17) Minnesota: Record 0-1 (Lost to the Packers) Last weeks rank: #10: Petterson got his 100 yards… but people (read: fantasy owners) surely expected more than that. They shouldn’t have, Green Bay has a tough D, and only if and until Tavaris Jackson becomes a good QB, then D’s are just gonna swarm him.

18) Tampa Bay: Record 0-1 (Lost to Saints 20-24) Last weeks rank: #23: Much more impressive then I imagined. Still they lost.

19) Houston: Record 0-1 (Lost to the Steelers 17-38): Last wees rank #11: Horrible opener for this years trendy pick. They are far from where they need to be, but are young and I expect them to improve as the season goes along

20) Miami: Record 0-1 (Lost to NY Jets 14-20) Last weeks rank #16: They played tough… just like last year. There just seems like there is no cohesion from top to bottom.

21) Cleveland: Record 0-1 (Lost to Dallas 10-28) Last weeks rank: #13: Poor start to the season, but tough opening opponent in Dallas. I’ll cut them some slack, but they look like they’ve regressed since last year.

22) Atlanta: Record 1-0 (Beat the Lions 34-21) Last weeks rank: #32: Very impressive. Michael Turner is the real deal, and Matt Ryan don’t look so bad neither.

23) Carolina: Record 1-0 (Beat the Chargers 26-24) Last weeks rank: #31: Another huge shocker and eliminated about 50% of all Suicide pools. I just don’t trust this team, but can’t start off more impressively then this.

24) Baltimore: Record 1-0 (Beat Cincy 17-10) Joe Flacco looked good, as did Ray Rice. Harbaugh has the team playing steady and calm… it’ll work against teams like Cincy, and he’s obviously got the team on a path to redemption.

25) St. Louis: Record 0-1 (Lost to the Birds 38-3) Last weeks rank: #17: Absolutely pathetic performance. This team has too many weapons on offense to be held to just 3 points, but they have serious problems on D, such as no secondary whatsoever.

26) Cincinnati: Record 0-1 (Lost to the Ravens 10-17) Last weeks rank: #21: How far this team has fallen. You may as well get rid of the good guys too Marvin… this team is in serious trouble, and so is your job.

27) Washington: Record 0-1 (Lost to the Giants 7-16) Last weeks rank: #28: Yeah, that’s about what I thought they’d do. I suspect it will get worse from here on out.

28) Seattle: Record 0-1 (Lost to the Bills 10-34) Last weeks rank: #22: Wow… I thought they would suck, but I never imagined it would be this bad. LOL!

29) Oakland: Record 0-1(Lost to Denver 14-41) Last weeks rank: #24: Just plain old ugly. I was hoping to see a little more from them… I still think they can get things in the right direction. I think Russell and McFadden are great talents and I still think Kifin will get this team on the right track by the end of the season.

30) Detroit: Record 0-1 (Lost to Atlanta?!!? 21-34) Last weeks rank: #25: I obviously ranked this team way too high this year. Pathetic… I really need to see those pics Matt Millen has.

31) Kansas City: Record 0-1 (Lost to the Pats 10-17) Last weeks rank: #29: Had a big chance to shock the world, and nearly ended every suicide after just one week.

32) San Francisco: Record 1-0 (Lost to Cards 13-23) Last weeks rank: #30: Looks like JT O’Sullivan isn’t the answer either Nolan.

For those of us who feared that the Philadelphia Eagles would be feeling the loss of Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown from their starting lineup today, never took into account rookie sensation DeSean “Gone” Jackson (I’m coining the nickname). Jackson led the Eagles with 6 receptions for 106 yards and stamped his presence all over Lincoln Financial field today. He was in on nearly every play and it was easy to see that he caused fits throughout the inept secondary of the St. Louis Rams.

Not only did Jackson excel on offense, but he lived up to the hype on special teams when he returned a punt 67 yards, which set up a Brian Westbrook TD in the 3rd quarter.

It was the most impressive performance by an Eagles rookie since possibly Reggie White stepped on the field for the first time in 1985, and Eagles fans can seemingly relax their screams for a stud receiver, at least until they visit the Dallas Cowboys next Monday night.

Heading into the game, the Eagles were without both Brown and Curtis, their 2 starting wide outs, due to injuries, a pulled hamstring and a sports hernia, respectively. Even before the WR’s were hurt, however, there were plenty of concerns about the Eagles lacking a proven stud receiver in the mold of Terrell Owens. Even the selection of Jackson in the 2nd round of this years draft was seen as a stretch by the fans and media alike, but since his debut in the Eagles first pre-season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he’s shown that he’s more then anyone could have bargained for.

I would temper the enthusiasm as much as possible here, because Jackson is, afterall, a rookie. But what’s he’s done to this point is show that he belongs in the NFL and certainly has a shot at becoming a Superstar.

In their best season opener since beating Dallas in 2000, the Philadelphia Eagles blew out the St.Louis Rams Sunday 38-3. The game marked the debut of Desean Jackson, who exceeded all expectations by catching 6 passes for 106 yards, and returned 8 punts for 97 more yards, including a return of over 60 yards on route to the most impressive rookie debut for an Eagles team in recent memory.

The Defense, led by Stewart Bradley’s 9 tackles completely shut down a potentially explosive offense by sacking QB Marc Bulger 4 times and causing numerous off sides penalties by the St. Louis offense. New comer Assante Samuel had 3 interceptions sliip through his hands, two of which would surely have been returned for TD’s.

The team as whole played magnificently, but took their lead from their star QB, Donovan McNabb who had one of his most impressive performances ever, passing for 361 yards and 3 TD’s while connecting on 21-33 pass attempts. The game opened with the Eagles receiving the ball and immediately showed that this is not last years team. McNabb droped back on a second down play and hit Desean Jackson 47 yards downfield for the first of what looks like many NFL receptions. Jackson lept over his defender and snatched the ball out of the air on a truly remarkable catch for a rookie, especially considering his small stature.

Just before the end of the half, with the Eagles up 14-0, McNabb found Hank Baskett in stride for a 90 yard touchdown that cemented the new look on offense. Baskett (102yds) joined both Jackson and Greg Lewis (104 yds) with over 100 yards receiving himself. It was the first time the Eagles have had 3 players surpass the 100 yard receiving mark in a single game since 1961.

Brian Westbrook, the forgotten man on offense today, simply rushed for 91 yards on 19 carries and scored twice, once on a shuffle pass from McNabb to kick the scoring off and another on a 2 yard rush.

The Eagles also received strong performances from Sav Rocca, who pinned the Rams on their goaline twice and kicked a 3rd behind the 20, and Will Demps who had a knack for being around the ball on Special teams, downing two of those punts inside the 3.

Next up for the Eagles are the rival Dallas Cowboys, who defeated the Cleveland Browns 28-10 today to open up their season and set expectations for a huge early game in the NFL schedule when they face the Brds next Monday night.
