Sixers Rumors & News

Monday, July 13th, 2009

There has been rampant speculation over the past few days that the Sixers and Knicks have been working on a sign-and-trade deal that would send Andre Miller to New York in exchange for Chris Duhon.

Despite various reports that a deal is in the making, the agents for both guards have rebuffed the rumors.

Andy Miller, the agent for Andre Miller, said in a text message to Phil Jasner of the Philadelphia Daily News that “there is nothing to report.”

Likewise, Duhon’s agent, Kevin Bradbury, “It’s not true. I have not had any conversations with Philly in regards to this rumor.”

A source within the Knicks organization told the Daily News Sunday that there has been no contact with Miller. As did a source within the Sixers organization.

The Sixers made a one-year, $5.85 million contract offer to Miller, which he declined. Miller is believed to be seeking a 3-year deal, starting at $10.3 million. Now the two sides are working on a sign-and-trade deal.

This is a shameless, lazy post, but that’s OK because it involved hot chicks in little clothing.
The Sixers recently released a video of the dance team’s tryouts on their Youtube channel, and we have it here for you.
Enjoy.

Sixers’ General Manager Ed Stefanski said Wednesday that the team has made an offer to free agent point guard Andre Miller, but that the two sides are still far apart on a new contract.

“We have made an offer to Andre but they’re looking for a better offer from other places,” said Stefanski. “I’d say right now we’re in the mode of looking for a sign-and-trade that makes sense for both sides. … I’d say we’re far apart.”

When asked by the Philadelphia Daily News’ Sixers beat reporter Phil Jasner whether it was an issue of years or money, Stefanski replied indicated it was a mixture of both.

“To go long-term on a contract with an older point guard – we don’t see that as a viable option right now,” Stefanski said.

Miller is reportedly looking for a multi-year deal that would pay him at least the $10.3 million he made last season. According to Jasner, the Sixers were reportedly willing to give Miller a one-year deal worth $6 million, …

It was announced Monday that guard Royal Ivey declined the player option in his contract to play for the Sixers for the 2009-10 season. At the same time, Sixers’ fans all over the Delaware Valley asked “Who the hell is Royal Ivey?”

Sixers’ GM Ed Stefanski announced Ivey’s decision through a press release but decline to waste his time with further comment.

Ivey’s agent, Keith Glass, had to initially be reminded who Ivey was, and then he also declined comment.

In 71 games this season (who knew?), Ivey averaged 3.0 points and 1.1 rebound per game. He averaged a paltry 33.2% field goal percentage.

Surprisingly, Ivey had 36 steals to just 23 turnovers, the sixth best steal-to-turnover ratio (1.57) of any player in the league.

With the hiring of Eddie Jordan as the new head coach of the 76ers, I thought I would examine the 21 coaches that preceeded to him and determine the top 10 coaches in Sixers history. Just how big are these shoes that Jordan is gearing up to fill? Umm, well, not that big really.

I determined the top 10 by win percentage, and each coach had to have coached at least 82 games (one complete regular season).

Billy Cunningham (1978-1985) – Cunningham was originally drafted by the Sixers in 1965, and played much of his rookie season as a sixth man off the bench, but was good enough to be named to the NBA All-Rookie Team. He became the head coach on November 4, 1977, and coached some of the best team in the Sixers’ history. His teams included Sixers’ legends Bobby Jones, Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney, Moses Malone, and Dr. J – Julius Erving. He led the 76ers to 3 Atlantic Division Titles in 1978, 1981, and …

The 76ers traded high energy forward Reggie Evans to the Toronto Raptors for sharp shooting guard/forward Jason Kapono.
“We are very excited to add one of the league’s most prolific three-point shooters in Jason Kapono,” General Manager Ed Stefanski said through a press release. “We feel that this move addresses our goal of improving our shooting from the perimeter.

“I want to thank Reggie Evans for his contributions to the team for the past two seasons and we wish him only the best.”

Evans, who is owed $4.6 million this upcoming season and $5 million in 2010-2011, averaged 3.3 points in 14.4 minutes per game last season. He appeared in all of the team’s games last season but two.

Kapono, …

After several weeks of speculation and interviews, the Sixers’ have chosen as their new head coach the guy everyone thought was the pick from the very beginning, Eddie Jordan.

Jordan, fired early into the 2008-’09 by the Washington Wizards as their head coach, worked with Sixers’ GM Ed Stefanski when they were both with the New Jersey Nets, as an assistant coach and general manager, respectively.

The deal is for three years, but the size of the contract is as yet unknown. The Sixers are expected to formally announce Jordan during a press conference on Monday.

“I saw firsthand the immense impact Eddie Jordan had in helping the Nets reach two NBA Finals, and as the head coach in Washington, he consistently put his teams in a position to win on a nightly basis.

“He embodies all the qualities I was looking for in the next head coach of the Sixers, and we are very excited to have him in Philadelphia,” Stefanski said.

Jordan’s career head coaching record is 230-288 during …

Bob Salmi will not return next season as the color man for the Sixers’ television broadcasts, Comcast SportsNet announced Friday.

According to a statement issued by Maureen Quilter, director of communications for the network, “At the conclusion of the Sixers’ 2008-09 season, we evaluated all areas of the Sixers telecast. With this, Comcast SportsNet has decided not to renew the contract of broadcaster Bob Salmi. We thank Bo for his contributions to the network.”

Salmi reportedly declined comment when contacted by Phil Jasner of the Philadelphia Daily News.

Salmi was an assistant coach with the Sixers, New York Knicks, and the Dallas Mavericks before succeeding The Mayor Steve Mix on the Sixers’ broadcasts.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Sixers’ GM Ed Stefanski will Eddie Jordan for the team’s open head coaching job.

According to the Inquirer’s source, the two sides have already spoken via telephone. This would be an official face-to-face meeting between Jordan and Stefanski, who worked together as coach and GM, respectively, with the New Jersey Nets.

Jordan met with the Sacramento Kings in Las Vegas earlier this week about their open head coaching position.

Jordan has stated publicly that he would be meeting with the Sixers, and a source close to him has said that he would take the job in Philadelphia if he could choose between the two, as the Sixers are in a better position to win now than the Kings.

Jordan was fired by the Washington Wizards earlier this season after their 1-10 start.

According to Kate Fagan at the Inquirer, this is the lowdown on Jordan’s coaching style:

His overall coaching record is 230-288 (.444), but those numbers have taken a hit because he was fired from the …

According to a report by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Tony DiLeo will not return as the head coach of the Sixers next season.

DiLeo has reportedly withdrawn his name from consideration. It is unclear whether or not the Sixers were going to offer the job back to him.

That allows GM Ed Stefanski to openly pursue other coaches, such as Doug Collins, Avery Johnson, and Jeff Van Gundy, among others.

We will bring you mor eon this story as it is made available.

If Sixers’ General Manager was interested in pursuing Doug Collins as the team’s next coach, the former 76er-turned-coach-turned-analyst would take the call, according to his agent.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Collins’ agent John Langel told them that there had absolutely been no contact between the Sixers and his client, that while Collins has always left the door open to coaching again he would not pursue a job with a team that already has a coach in place, but if the Sixers removed Tony DiLeo as head coach, he would be interested.

“Certainly last year, he had an interest [in coaching],” Langel said. “He said if the right situation ever arose, he would be intrigued, but it would have to be the right situation, the right group of players. But he does not seek positions, particularly when someone is already in that position with a team; he has a good relationship with Tony DiLeo and has great respect for him and the job he has done.

“At this …

It’s bad enough the Sixers ended their 2008-2009 on a low note, after getting blown out but the Orlando Magic 114-89, but was it necessary for their backup center/11th man on the bench to come out and rip the coach after the loss?

Theo Ratliff was the last player to leave the locker room after Thursday night’s loss, mainly becasue he couldn’t keep his mouth shut.

“It’s distasting to go out like that, to be on the bench watching.  It’s not a good feeling.

The coaches are responsible for guys [being] prepared and playing.  They have to hold guys accountable. It’s been that way all year, so you couldn’t expect anything different.

You have to step up and get into guys. If [as the coach] you don’t have that type of personality, to be able to go at guys.

At the same time, it’s your position. You’ve seen the mistakes and all that going on. Was anybody getting talked to about that? To me, this …
